The Palm Springs Cultural Center is pleased to announce a very special 50th Anniversary screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS. The classic 1963 horror film, which has recently been digitally remastered to commemorate Universal Pictures’ 100th anniversary, will be screened at Camelot Theatres for one night only on Thursday, March 14th at 7pm. Actress Tippi Hedren, who starred in the film, will attend the screening and participate in a special Q&A after the screening.
THE BIRDS, which film critic David Thomson once described as Hitchcock’s “last unflawed film,” was inspired by the novelette of the same name by British writer Daphne du Maurier. It remains one of the world’s greatest thrillers, and was honored to be named seventh greatest thriller in the American Film Institute’s 2001 list of the top 100 Movie Thrillers.
When it was released by Universal Pictures in 1963, THE BIRDS was billed as ‘introducing’ Tippi Hedren. The film also starred Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright. Hedren, who was hand-picked by Hitchcock to play the part of Melanie Daniels has said that although THE BIRDS and Hitchcock launched her career, they also practically destroyed it.
